 Passing of Chief John (Jack) H Flaherty

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Chief John (Jack) H. Flaherty on Friday, September 21, 2007.
 
Chief John (Jack) H. Flaherty was the first President of the New Jersey Fire Prevention & Protection Association serving from 1962 through 1969.
 
He and the other charter members of the NJFPPA were pioneers in the fire safety world at a time when in many jurisdictions fire safety meant doing school fire drills once a year in October.
 
They had a vision and acted on it and the result was an organization that ultimately led the efforts that culminated in the creation of the original NJ Fire Safety Study Commission, adoption of the Uniform Fire Safety Act and implementation of the strongest fire safety code in the nation amongst numerous other success over the years.
 
The annual Fire Prevention Inspector of the Year Award given out by the NJFPPA is named for him in recognition of his dedication and hard work. Jack assisted in the presentation of that award each year until 2006 when he could not make the trip to the annual dinner.
 
His legacy and that of the other charter members of the NJFPPA will continue on indefinitely.
